I wanted a finish with strong protection, but something that allowed the feel of the wood to come through more than a high gloss coating would.  Many trial runs were made on scrap pieces.  I finally settled on a combination of WATCO Danish Oil and MINWAX Wipe-on Poly.

Hanging in my furnace room to dry, using wire and a dowel through one of the tuning peg holes.

I hung the bass so I could do an entire coat at once and not have any seams.

After multiple coats and sanding, the final look is starting to show.
